This two-phase incremental exercise test to exhaustion allows for a comprehensive understanding of the primary physiological determinants of endurance performance. This test will specifically determine your lactate thresholds, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and heart rate profile. The results can be used to inform appropriate training zones.

What does the test involve?
Prior to arriving on the day, we advise you to read through the “Other Important Information” section below.
When you arrive, the testing team will meet you in the Sports Centre Reception and take you through to our labs where they will outline the testing protocol and you will be fitted with the below:
- A heart rate monitor around your chest
- A mask over your nose and mouth which is connected to our on-line gas analysis system to assess respiration
- A small sample of blood will be taken from either a finger or earlobe for resting measures of blood lactate.
Testing protocol:
- The test involves a number (approximately 6-9) of three to four-minute exercise stages that will start at an easy intensity and progressively increase to a higher (submaximal) intensity.
- At the end of each exercise stage, the following will be measured:
- Heart rate
- Perception of effort
- A small blood sample taken from a finger or ear prick to measure blood lactate.
- Following the identification of key lactate thresholds, the test will progressively increase in intensity to maximal levels. The test will either be stopped by the testing team once key physiological markers have been reached or be stopped due to your own volitional exhaustion.
Following:
Immediately following the test, we will talk to you about some initial findings and you will then have chance to shower and change in our onsite shower and changing rooms.
All data collected will be analysed and included into a individual physiological report that will be sent to you in the timeframe outlined by your testing team.
What are the benefits of the test?
You will be provided with a comprehensive personalised report and feedback that will notify you of your current physiological ability and help inform your training. Key aspects of the report will include:
- Training zones based on your lactate profile, heart rate, speed/power and time.
- Maximal oxygen update (VO2max)
- Maximal heart rate
Following discussion of your needs, we can also include other data of interest and submaximal equivalents e.g., Fat max, energy expenditure, economy. Please inform us of this during the booking process.
How long will the test take?
The test will take between 1.5-2 hours maximal.
How much will it cost?
Single Test Price: £162
Re-test price (for 2nd bookings conducted within 12 months of first): £136
